PHOTOS FROM TRI-CITY SPEEDWAY'S UMP SUMMER NATIONALS

Pontoon Beach, IL (July 9, 2006) Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA rolled into Tri-City Speedway and put on one of the most dominating performances that has been seen in several years at the track. Birkhofer hit the setup perfectly in the main event and left the other twenty-one competitors wondering where he went. Before the end of the forty lap main event, Birkhofer had lapped all but four cars and had all four of those cars in his sights and probably would of came close to putting the entire field a lap down had he not eased off his pace in the closing laps. Birkhofer's victory earned him a cool $10,000 in the UMP Summer Nationals event.

The big battle in the main event was for second place as Don O'Neal and UMP Summer Nationals point leader Shannon Babb dueled for all forty laps. Babb never got more than a car length behind O'Neal throughout the event but was unable to ever complete a pass and claim the spot. O'Neal rolled across the finish line in the second position and stated in a post race interview that Birkhofer gave them all a good old fashion butt-whoopin. Babb was equally amazed by Birkhofer's run.

Jeep VanWormer brought his ride home in the fourth spot and Terry Phillips rounded out the top five.

The UMP Modified division showcased a great battle at the front as Tom Seets, Sr., Mike Harrison, Leroy Haney, Matt Mevert and John Stanton all battled in out throughout the twenty five laps. Seets led most of the early going as he took the lead from the pole position, but Harrison kept battling using the high side. Harrison slid back to third and even fourth place as he continued to work the high side in the early going while the low side appeared to be the faster line. The high side began to come in for Harrison near the half way mark and he moved past Seets for the lead with just seven laps remaining and never looked back. Meanwhile, the battle for the rest of the top five spots never ended as cars swapped positions lap after lap. Mevert took the second spot while Seets claimed the third position. Haney crossed the line fourth and Stanton took the fifth spot.

Sam Kizer appeared to be on his way to a dominating win in the Street Stock division, however Richie Gabriel ended up with the dominating performance as he stormed to the front after transferring to the main event through the last chance consolation race. Gabriel worked his way to the front and then took the led from Kizer with just a few laps remaining. Kizer didn't give in easily as fought back on the outside but came up short at the line. David Parker, Ricky Huebner and Robby Benson completed the top five.
